Penguin Secur-e-mail - a SSH based e-mail
security software
Want Unlimited POP3 Email? Click Here! Since SSH (secure shell) is a standard service on almost each server, no server-side installation is needed. The software runs on a MS Windows 9x/Me/NT/2K/XP system tray. It will enable a POP3 server directly on your computer, running on local ports 110, 111, 112, 113 or 3050, 3051, 3052 and 3053 (allowing you to pick up e-mail securely from up to 4 different POP3 servers). You need to setup your e-mail client (e.g. MS Outlook) to pick up e-mail locally from your computer ("localhost" interface, or 127.0.0.1 IP number). As soon as your e-mail client starts to retrieve e-mail from the local ports, e.g. 110-113 on your computer, Secur-e-mail will connect to the specified POP3 servers using SSH. Once connected to the server, it will retrieve the e-mail, transport it back to your computer through the SSH connection and pass it over to your e-mail client on the localhost ports 110 to 113. If you use just one POP3 mail server (e.g. your company mail server on your LAN), you just need to change the POP3 server IP number setting from the company mail server IP number to 127.0.0.1 (or " localhost ") in your e-mail client software (MS Outlook). Then you need to tell Penguin Secur-e-mail the IP numbers of the remote POP3 servers, login names and passwords. The login (mail account) name and the password are used only to connect to the server using SSH. It can be any valid account on the server the administrator can create for this purpose, or it can be your POP3 mail account login/password combination. The software is very compact and easy to setup. In less than 2 minutes you can pick up your e-mail using a highly secure SSH connection. How does it work? See the figure below. It is a typical scenario where a client computer connects directly to the port 110 on the mail server:
In the next picture, there is the Penguin Secur-e-mail installed on the client computer. MS Outlook no longer communicates directly with the server. It connects locally instead, to the port 110 for example, where the Secur-e-mail listens to Outlook's connections. As soon as connection happens, Secur-e-mail creates an encrypted tunnel and alows MS Outlook to transfer authentication commands and e-mail through that tunnel. When finished, all connections are closed and Secur-e-mail on the client PC waits for another connection:
Penguin Secur-e-mail uses a SSH compression so as the data transfer between your PC and the server is faster. The shareware demo version if fully functional, however, it will not save the setup and it will run only for 30 minutes. You will need to set it up manually each time you will want to use it. When you buy the product key, you can unlock your shareware copy using the key, moreover, you can unlock all the future versions with the same key.
